Our family has grown a lot over the last few years and to fit us all at the cottage we have built two cozy bunkies. We needed some inexpensive but cottage appropriate storage and when we got this amazing Great Lakes printed paper in from Kid Icarus – I knew I had to use it somehow!
I did a bit of research and decided on these dressers from Ikea. They are unfinished wood and just calling out for some embellishment!
After assembling the frame (which always takes longer than you think with Ikea furniture!) I wanted to paint them a bright fun colour for the kids. I pulled the lovely blue out from the Great Lakes paper and set to work painting the frames and the drawer interiors. I know it is a pain to paint the inside of the drawers but it gives a much more finished look if you do.
I let the drawers fronts dry overnight and started decoupaging the map paper on. I used Mod Podge to glue the paper down and coated the fronts lightly so that the paper wouldn’t absorb the tiny fingerprints that seem to want to endlessly point out interesting bits on the map!
Once the drawer fronts were complete, I assembled both dressers, added some old fashioned crystal knobs and put them in place.
They have been happily housing bathing suits, sunscreen, etc… ever since!
