I’m so excited to share our second piece in the 10 Artists, 1 Paper showcase, Flower Book by Don Taylor. Don is a magnificent Book Binder and has been a great friend of the store for the last 10 years and we were thrilled he wanted to be involved.

Don Taylor Flower Book

Don Taylor Flower Book

Artist: Don Taylor

Title: Flower Book

Materials: Goatskin binding with Chiyogami paper onlay

Artist Description: My medium is bookbinding and I decided to produce a sketchbook bound in full black goatskin with an “edited” piece of the Chiyogami onlayed onto the leather before covering the boards.  The paper was pasted onto the leather and pressed until dry. Then the back side of the leather was sanded, which allowed the paper to be embedded into the surface of the leather.  At that point the leather and paper laminate was used to cover the boards of the binding.

Take a look at this great feature of Don and his incredible work and passion!

10 Artists, 1 Paper – Stitched Paper Couple #1 by Judith Pudden

Sunday, October 4th, 2015

I am thrilled to bring you the first piece from our 10 artists, 1 paper showcase from Judith Pudden.

Title: Stitched paper couple #1.

Materials: Chiyogami and Japanese tissue, cotton floss, metallic thread, cotton paper

Size: 11 x 11” (28 x 28 cm)

Artist Description: I began incorporating Chiyogami appliqués into my embroidery in 2013, after a friend took me to a paper conservators’ event at The JPP. The moment I saw the packages of Chiyogami squares all fanned out I knew I want to add them to my work. At the time, I was stitching erotica that was based on early 20th century photographs, and I thought the patterns of the Chiyogami would complement this style. My interest in costume history then led me to experiment with simple Chiyogami cut-outs of corsets and handbags, stitched onto watercolour paper. Although these were originally intended as inexpensive items that I could create more quickly than my embroidery on fabric, they soon began to evolve into more complicated pieces. Parasols, teacups, and blouses with leg o’ mutton sleeves led to bustled Victorian dresses, and the same friend who first introduced me to Japanese paper commissioned a set of 18th century robes à la française, Regency dresses, and Elizabethan gowns. Over the course of many visits to The Paper Place I have amassed an extensive collection of Chiyogami and other Japanese papers.

The 18th century couple that I created for The Paper Place is my largest stitched paper piece to date, and uses 46 pieces of Chiyogami and Japanese tissue. The costumes are based on based on Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) accession M.2007.211.41a-c, a French suit from ca. 1765, and LACMA accession M.2007.211.929a-d, an English robe à la française from ca. 1765.
