New Year, New Ideas, New Notebooks!

Sunday, January 6th, 2013

Happy 2013! While I’m not the type of person to take New Year’s resolutions very seriously, I do have one ritual that I perform every January: starting a new notebook. If you’re as obsessed with stationery as the rest of us Paper Place crew, then you probably have a dozen notebooks on the go at the same time (and a stack of blank ones that are just too pretty to write in, too!), but I do like to start a new one at the beginning of the year. This is usually a small, pocket-sized book that I carry around for twelve months to jot down ideas for new projects I’d like to work on throughout the year, new books and records and restaurants to check out, or whatever comes to mind while I’m roaming around the city. These new mini notebooks that we received from Paperways in Korea are just perfect for this purpose. They are inexpensive and colourful – exactly what everyone needs in January! – and have fantastic graphic patterned pages.

My favourite Paperways notebook  has a light, creamy cover and an orange and blue grid pattern inside (and it’s only $3.95!). The pages just happen to match my favourite roll of washi tape, so I used some to make page dividers.

Here’s to a productive 2013, filled with new ideas and projects!

A Peek at the New Indian Papers

Sunday, December 23rd, 2012

It’s always exciting when new papers come in, new prints, colours and designs to play with! A little while ago we received our new Indian Papers, but it was just this week when we finished labeling, and filing them so that you can now browse them by binder at the back of the store (side note: All the papers we carry can be found in said binders all marked by their type, don’t be intimidated, dive in! If you ever do need a specific kind of paper and are not sure how to start, we would be more than happy to help you find what you’re looking for.)

The first two papers are from the new set of semi-sheer white on translucent prints. Aesthetically they are delicate, but the paper itself is very strong and maleable. Heavy and almost fabric-like. They’re beautiful!

And now for something completely different, some very colourful, spot-metallic papers.

The prints of the Indian Papers vary from mod, floral, and ikat. They make great graphic prints, wallpapers and wrapping.

Creative Gifts for Creative People: Photographer Edition

Monday, December 17th, 2012

It can be hard to shop for creative people. Artists are picky and strange, thankfully The Paper Place is kind of a Mecca for things artists love. Fine paper, for one, hard-to-find art supplies and loads of crafting goodness.

So what do you get for the person who, maybe doesn’t have everything, but does have eleven cameras?

A wonderful letterpress poster of even more cameras! It will serve as a buying guide, really. Sycamore Press’ prints are lovely in any iteration.

A fun and informative book on pinhole camera construction complete with easy to follow diagrams. Your camera can be a cereal box! And then you can have MORE cameras and cereal,  it’s a win-win situation.

A sunography kit, so they can get their pasty-darkroom-hermit selves out in the sun to create some cyanotypes with nature. (People still use darkrooms… some people. Though computers are just as bad when cultivating that… bluish pallor.)

A pocket Moleskine notebook: the grid notebooks are great because they allow for  writing and drawing diagrams, perfect for the photographer who needs to make a shot list, sketch their lighting setups, and keep track of their exposures and printing. Add some photography-themed washi tape so they can personalize their books and accessories!

Holiday Greetings

Saturday, November 24th, 2012

It’s always great to receive a warm message from someone you love. Especially during the holidays. This year we have a truly lovely selection of boxed Christmas cards. Here are four designs that I thought were were quite special. Although, it was hard to choose just four.

Old School Stationers. Manufactured in Portland Oregon.

“Mistletoe” from Rifle Paper Co.

Letterpress with soy-based inks from A Papier.

Hand letterpress from Egg Press.

Some of the selection.

Paper Source Garland Kits

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

With the holidays fast approaching, the staff here at The Paper Place (along with our crafty customers) are frantically scooping up supplies to make handmade cards, gifts and decorations. Thankfully, the folks at Paper Source have made that last one a breeze with their fully-equipped, easy to assemble Garland Kits. Because my hands are always freezing, naturally I was drawn to the Mitten Garland, which comes with pre-cut, festively coloured paper mittens, stickers, and baker’s twine to string them all up. Here’s the one I made to hang up in the shop:

I like to think of this garland as an ode to all the mittens I’ve lost over the years!
