Suzuki House

Monday, March 18th, 2013

As a new member of The Paper Place team I have to admit it is at all at once inspiring and a little teensy bit overwhelming (in a super awesome way!!) to be surrounded by the multitude of supplies and the rich creative atmosphere.

In order to learn more about the qualities of the materials we sell I am making sure I pick up a little bit of this and a dab of that to take home and play with.  The first thing I brought home to explore was none other than the “Suzuki Square” which is a nifty little square (9.5 x9.5”) of hand made natural Kozo Paper. What drew me to it was it’s light and delicate appearance, it’s soft texture and the way it reflects light.

Once in my studio I decided that I wasn’t ready to draw on it at all and instead I cut up one single square into pieces that I then sewed into a tiny little house.  This was a very satisfying project to complete and a pleasant reminder that being experimental is a good thing.

Perhaps you might like to come in and try something new too, I highly recommend the Suzuki Square.

Easy Silhouettes

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

I made some easy silhouettes of my boyfriend and I for our apartment.  I wanted something simple that wouldn’t contrast any of the other colours in our apartments decor.

I got black oval frames that already had cut matting inside and painted a gold rim in the centre.

I used Chiyogami for the background with a cut piece of Moriki Kozo for the faces.

Simple.  Easy.  Classic.

So Many Pickles…

Monday, January 21st, 2013

I made a mini art work for my baby nephew.  His name is Dylan and my family has started calling him Dilly or Dill Pickle so I wanted to make something dill pickle themed for his room.

I used a 6×8″ piece of Etchu Hagaki for the background and cut and pasted Moriki Kozo shaped pickles in Lime.  I used a variety of papers to make the pickle outfits, including Moriki Kozo, Metal Momi, Nepalese (available in-store) and solid colour and shimmer card stocks (available in-store).

I used the Micron Pens (available in-store) in black to draw the jar, lid, and some of the details on the pickles.  I also used watercolours to paint a light brine in the jar.
