New Paper, New Cards

Friday, May 24th, 2013

We’ve recently added some new papers, tissues and cardstocks to our collection available instore.  I love making cards for any and all occasions; sometimes I like to send cute handmade cards to pen pals instead of a plain old letter.  I used some of the new Japanese Decorative papers and Cardstock to make a bunch of different cards this week.

add a liner

There are different ways to add a little something extra personal to your cards.  You don’t have to stop decorating at the card.  I added custom envelop liners, one with some washi tape bunting to one to match it’s card.  I decorated the cards using washi tape, paper punches, rubber stamps and a hand cut silhouette detail.  I used (from left to right) the Kin Sunago Teal, Peacock, and Sudare Aurora White for these cards.

I love the pale confetti bits and shimmer in the Sudare Aurara White.

front

I decorated the front of the envelopes for these cards.  I also made a mini sized card to give a friend in person (it’s not a mailable size).  Our blank Table Setting Cards with a Bitty Bags (both available instore) make a great mini card and envelope set.  I use our Flora and Fauna stamp set, stickers, rubber stamps and paper cutouts to decorate.  The paper I used (from left to right) Kin Sunago Azuki, Roketsu Gold, and a mix of all the new papers for these cards.

I think the Roketsu Gold is beautifully simplistic.  I didn’t want to add too much to this card and mainly let the paper speak for itself.

flap

I decorated the flaps of the envelopes for these cards.  For one I used a different coloured paper with a new Vintage Letterpress stamps to match it’s card.  I added some new stickers to the flap of the other envelope for a little extra sparkle too.  I used (from left to right) Imaizumi, Pearlized Filigree on Champagne, and the Tanabata Cardstock for these cards.

The Imaizumi is great if you’re looking for a pearlized white paper with an organic woodgrain/rippling water effect.  It’s one of those papers that it easy to match if you just wanna add a little bit of decorative paper to your card.

Pastels for Spring

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Hi, I’m Kate, and I have a confession to make: I love girly, light colours.

Since Easter is the only time of year where I almost totally get away with it, my first blog post is a celebration of pastels. We’re all yearning for spring these days – I propose we all meditate on these powdery hues to encourage the frost.

Warning: For those allergic to pink… Just think of them as “very light reds”.

Rifle Paper Co. makes lovely cards - both blank sets (with envelopes) and for occasions.

Love is a Doing Word

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

I once read somewhere that love is not only a feeling, it must also be an action. If you love someone, you must act with love, make it demonstrable–tangible.

blog 01bright

In my world, this does not mean jewelry, fancy dinners, or ritual sacrifice to some serpent-headed god of the underworld–it’s the little things. Picking you up when it’s cold outside, giving you a shoulder rub because you’ve started to develop the hunched-over-the-computer neck-hump, and leaving you little notes describing, in detail, the extent of their love.

So let’s do that last one.

blog 01c

For this exercise, I suggest for each of the fourteen days leading up to Valentine’s Day, to write a note to your special person (or cat, that is legit.) and leave it somewhere they will find it. Though maybe not their pants, because they might just wash those. Sometime. I hope. Good places: taped to their coffee cup, tucked in their wallet, under their glasses on the nightstand, in with their lunch, etc.

blog 02c

This is the time to say what you really feel. Some examples I’ve come up with:

I’ve grown tolerant of your face.
and
You are very special. Like a duck-billed-platypus.

As you can see, you just need to tap into your own warm and fuzzy heart and the words will come. Let your love shine.

Any paper and envelope will do, but for my set, I’ve gotten a little crafty and, since they don’t need to be mailed, tiny. What you will need:

- 2 sheets ivory card stock cut into business card size (the yield is 9 per 8.5×11″ sheet, so it gives you wiggle room if you mess up).
- 14 baby envelopes. I’ve chosen Ivory, Paper Bag and Fuchsia.
- An assortment of Washi tape to decorate. (here I worked with pink stripe, red stripe, red dot on white, grey dot on white, white dot on navy, gold alphabet on white, black alphabet on white, and coral… because I have all of these lying around.)
- A heart-punch for the envelopes, to show a bit of the love (in this case, the Washi-tape decoration) through.

blog 03b

Because I hate waste, and I think these notes are too pretty and full of love and effort to just throw out I suggest you punch small holes into the cards and hang them from some twine–make your own garland full of affection and hang it somewhere just for the two of you. (Don’t rub it in.)

Save the punched-envelopes to be filled again next year with new notes, make this a sweet little tradition!

Creative Card Ideas

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

I always give a handmade card for birthdays. But year after year the pressure is on to top the card from the previous year!  I am always on the look out for new ideas, pop-ups or different unique shapes to make my cards.  The Encyclopedia of Paper-folding Designs is full of innovative card templates from an assortment of Japanese designers. I gave a few of them a try by enlarging the templates on a copy machine and transposing them to card stock.  They are super fun!

Cute kitty cards!  These guys are beyond adorable. They make a sweet note or even fun table place cards.

This cool geometric card folds out from a neat pentagram into a long banner style card.  It could be adapted for whatever occasion.  The pentagram shape would make a lovely Christmas star!

Heart shaped petals peel open to reveal your message on this one.  It’s perfect for Valentine’s day!

The Encyclopedia of Paper-folding Designs is a great resource for any avid card maker and is available with all your other fun card making supplies at The Paper Place!
