Washi Tape Walls

Thursday, August 7th, 2014

If anyone knows me they know, I love using Washi Tape.  It’s easy to get creative when you are using something with endless potential.  After 4 years of living in my small apartment with my boyfriend it feels like it’s time for a bit of change.  I was getting a little bored of the piece that hung above our bed and  wanted to add a little something extra to our plain old boring walls.  We rent and my boyfriend doesn’t really like the idea of painting the walls to add a bit of colour to the room.

Before

Our apartment has a lot of blues, greys, and red so I wanted to add something in the same colour family.  Using Washi Tape, I created a geometrical mountain pattern.  I first cut out pieces of kraft in the sizes that I wanted so I could map out where exactly I was going to tape off.  I made outlines on the wall around my kraft pieces and then discarded them.  I found it easiest to know exactly where I was going to tape off with the outlines.  Once I had my mountains in place I just filled in the space.

Done Wall

I made each stripe the width of two pieces of tape and measured the spaces in between each one to make sure they’re look uniform.  After I had everything taped off I cut off the excess making clean straight lines.

It took an afternoon to create and looks great!  Now get out there and make something new with some Washi Tape!

All that glitters…

Friday, July 18th, 2014

As a lover of all things gold and shiny, and of design from the early 20th century, I am glad  to see Art Deco inspiration still going strong for stationery this year! We recently got some new items for all of those who still enjoy writing things by hand…

I love having boxed cards around the house. Usually a more economical choice than individual greetings cards. It’s nice to have a supply laying around for those unexpected last minute birthday parties, also (as I can tell you from experience) a random unexpected hand written note in the mail is pretty exciting! These cards are black and white with gold foil details and pretty gold envelopes. Pick a bright coloured Le Pen to write your note, seal it up with washi tape, and you’re set

The trend carries over to more personal stationery items as well. These pretty foiled journals are the perfect size to carry with you and maybe for an unexpected moment to journal in the park. Of course, we also have matching pencils… cause why not?

Naturally… it all comes back to the paper. Our Nepalese hand screened papers also come in a variety of art deco inspired prints with metallic pigments. Great for wrapping something special, embellishing invites or as a hanging print.

Stay Gold!

Fresh Folds

Saturday, May 31st, 2014

A few years ago, inspired by some simple origami my partner Jeff had been playing around with, my dear friend and photographer Evonne asked him to collaborate on a series of photos. Evonne headed to The Paper Place, collected origami papers that suited the feeling she wanted to capture, and picked up the book ” Folding Techniques for Designers” by Paul Jackson.

Hundreds of pieces of paper and crisp precise folds later ( I watched this all happen from my couch) an array of beautiful geometric models were born.

Evonne shot the pieces close up, in a studio with bright natural lighting. The photos have been made into large scale prints, the images so wonderful, it’s hard to tell if it’s a painting, a photo, or that its even an image of paper. These pieces have been shown at the Trinity Bellwoods Art Crawl and were feature at the 2013 Artists Project.

Spring Is Finally Here!

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

It seems like we’ve been waiting forever for the cold winter weather to end here in Toronto.  We can now start to see the beginnings of a beautiful spring and summer.  Looking around the city you can really be inspired by the lush colours starting to pop up everywhere.

We currently have some amazing Batik Mums Nepalese papers in our windows that really let the light shine through.

Looks like we’re finally being rewarded for the long, cold winter that we had to endure.
