Literary Letter Writing Stationery Set

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

I have to admit, it wasn’t until after last week’s Letter Writing Summer Social here at The Paper Place (man, what a party!) that I found myself  really interested in incorporating stationery and writing long-hand letters into my everyday life. I mean, I always thought it would be nice to take some time and hand-write a letter to my best friend on the other side of the world (instead of  firing off an email), though I never seemed to find the time. But, watching everyone decorating envelopes and composing beautiful letters to friends and family made me lament my exclusive email and text message habits. After recovering from Thursday’s party, I took some time to make my own stationery. I revisited some letters my girlfriend and I exchanged years ago and saw that what we mostly wrote to each other about were the books we were reading, going so far as to include lengthy excerpts from whatever novel or poetry collection was inspiring us at the time. With that in mind, I decided to take apart some previously loved books and transform the pages into letter-writing paper and envelope liners.

I used the Paper Source Envelope Liner template to create liners for 4-bar sized envelopes (in Gravel). The clear template makes it easy to position your liner exactly where you want it on the page, so I was able to maximize the amount of text that would be visible in my envelope.

For the actual sheets of letter writing paper, I quickly thumbed through my book and tore out the pages that had the least amount of text on them (chapter headings and title pages work exceptionally well). I have to warn you though, this step is not for the faint of heart – resign yourself to the fact that you’ll never read this book ever again before you proceed! After tearing out about a dozen pages, I cut them down to 5×7 sheets.

I made sure that one side of the sheet was almost entirely blank  with just a bit of text at the top – without any other context, a simple line of text can be very poetic, mysterious, or just plain strange! The other side of the sheet is covered in text – I like the idea of my friend being able to read random excerpts from the novel when she`s done with my letter.

While Letter Writing Month might officially be over, I`m only just getting started and I hope you`ve found enough inspiration here throughout July to keep it going all-year-round!

Letter Writing Summer Social Success!

Friday, July 27th, 2012

As many of you know, this July has been Letter Writing Month here at the Paper Place. This past Wednesday evening, we held our Letter Writing Summer Social at the store – an evening of letter writing, socializing and treats!

This was our first time having an event like this one and we had both unanticipated attendance and SUCH a good time! Guests had access to our craft stash, vintage typewriter and were invited to participate in The Love Lettering Project and sift through vintage stamps to mail their creations at the Pop-Up Postal Outlet! Thank you so much to everyone who came out and participated, wrote some letters, snacked on macarons, chatted and made beautiful things! We also extend a very special thanks to Lindsay of the Love Lettering Project, Jaime of Send More Mail and Kate of Toronto’s First Post Office for joining us for this fantastic evening!

A Season for Letters–Send More Mail this Fall!

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Summer was holding on for quite some time but it seems as though autumn has officially arrived in Toronto. This season is letter writing season. Break out the hot chocolate, big band music and colourful stationery and you’re set!

I fell head over heels for these little animal musicians! I rummaged around my vintage stamp collection until I came upon some elk, bear and whale stamps. A well-suited match I’d say! These letters are now on their way to friends in Ontario, California and England.

August Correspondences – Send More Mail

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Living in the city I sometimes forget about the stars.  The past two weekends I’ve been up north, surrounded by trees and lakes by day, underneath the huge star-filled sky at night.  Inspired by this I got to writing some letters on bright starry origami paper!

Send More Mail…Now that we can again!

Friday, July 8th, 2011

I’m happily back to my letter-writing now that the post is back on track.  I took a great big sheet of air mail-themed paper from The Paper Place and trimmed it down to smaller sheets.  Paired up with an array of red, white and blue air mail envelopes these beauties will hopefully be a delight to receive in the mailbox!

My summer mail fun includes:

- Making paper airplanes out of pretty paper.
- Scooping up some new stamps from the post office.  (I’m loving the zodiac series!)
- Writing letters under the shade of the pink umbrellas at Sugar Beach.
