Pastels for Spring

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Hi, I’m Kate, and I have a confession to make: I love girly, light colours.

Since Easter is the only time of year where I almost totally get away with it, my first blog post is a celebration of pastels. We’re all yearning for spring these days – I propose we all meditate on these powdery hues to encourage the frost.

Warning: For those allergic to pink… Just think of them as “very light reds”.

New Year, New Ideas, New Notebooks!

Sunday, January 6th, 2013

Happy 2013! While I’m not the type of person to take New Year’s resolutions very seriously, I do have one ritual that I perform every January: starting a new notebook. If you’re as obsessed with stationery as the rest of us Paper Place crew, then you probably have a dozen notebooks on the go at the same time (and a stack of blank ones that are just too pretty to write in, too!), but I do like to start a new one at the beginning of the year. This is usually a small, pocket-sized book that I carry around for twelve months to jot down ideas for new projects I’d like to work on throughout the year, new books and records and restaurants to check out, or whatever comes to mind while I’m roaming around the city. These new mini notebooks that we received from Paperways in Korea are just perfect for this purpose. They are inexpensive and colourful – exactly what everyone needs in January! – and have fantastic graphic patterned pages.

My favourite Paperways notebook  has a light, creamy cover and an orange and blue grid pattern inside (and it’s only $3.95!). The pages just happen to match my favourite roll of washi tape, so I used some to make page dividers.

Here’s to a productive 2013, filled with new ideas and projects!

Cycling through the Post

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

Two of my favourite things: my bicycle and letter writing.

So why not combine the two?

Tucked inside each envelope is a little packet of bicycle shaped paperclips. And there’s a 1974 bicycle stamp on every envelope.

Now it’s time to bike over to the nearest post box and get these sent!

Literary Letter Writing Stationery Set

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

I have to admit, it wasn’t until after last week’s Letter Writing Summer Social here at The Paper Place (man, what a party!) that I found myself  really interested in incorporating stationery and writing long-hand letters into my everyday life. I mean, I always thought it would be nice to take some time and hand-write a letter to my best friend on the other side of the world (instead of  firing off an email), though I never seemed to find the time. But, watching everyone decorating envelopes and composing beautiful letters to friends and family made me lament my exclusive email and text message habits. After recovering from Thursday’s party, I took some time to make my own stationery. I revisited some letters my girlfriend and I exchanged years ago and saw that what we mostly wrote to each other about were the books we were reading, going so far as to include lengthy excerpts from whatever novel or poetry collection was inspiring us at the time. With that in mind, I decided to take apart some previously loved books and transform the pages into letter-writing paper and envelope liners.

I used the Paper Source Envelope Liner template to create liners for 4-bar sized envelopes (in Gravel). The clear template makes it easy to position your liner exactly where you want it on the page, so I was able to maximize the amount of text that would be visible in my envelope.

For the actual sheets of letter writing paper, I quickly thumbed through my book and tore out the pages that had the least amount of text on them (chapter headings and title pages work exceptionally well). I have to warn you though, this step is not for the faint of heart – resign yourself to the fact that you’ll never read this book ever again before you proceed! After tearing out about a dozen pages, I cut them down to 5×7 sheets.

I made sure that one side of the sheet was almost entirely blank  with just a bit of text at the top – without any other context, a simple line of text can be very poetic, mysterious, or just plain strange! The other side of the sheet is covered in text – I like the idea of my friend being able to read random excerpts from the novel when she`s done with my letter.

While Letter Writing Month might officially be over, I`m only just getting started and I hope you`ve found enough inspiration here throughout July to keep it going all-year-round!
